This program provides students with the skills and competencies to become a Pharmacy Assistant.
The skills acquired are:
- A basic knowledge of medical terminology and body systems, their diseases and disorders.
- A mastery of the pharmacy calculations necessary for the pharmacy assistant to use daily in the pharmacy setting.
- A thorough knowledge of pharmacy practice as it relates to the assistant.
- An in-depth understanding of why, how, and what drugs are prescribed for specific conditions and diseases in different sections of the body.
- A thorough knowledge of the drug classifications, the common drug names and uses, and how to apply that knowledge in filling prescriptions accurately.
- A full range of computer and office skills, including current software applications, keyboarding skills, general office management, accounting, personal and professional development, and customer service.
- On-site work experience through participation in a clinical externships at a retail pharmacy.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Assisting the pharmacist in the preparation of prescriptions including but not limited to:
- Receiving, deciphering, processing, filling, compounding, labeling, and dispensing of prescriptions and pharmaceutical products;
- Preparing and reconciling third party billings;
- Receiving and sending electronic communications;
Phone-in refills;
- Operation of RX computers;
- Monitoring stock levels to ensure sufficient quantities for optimal operation;
- Billing and reconciliation of manual and computerized third party claims;
- Maintaining inventory records;
- Assist with the maintenance of prescription records and inventories of medications and pharmaceutical products;
- Preparing receipts, invoices, letters and memos, and filing;
- Communicating effectively with customers, physicians, and suppliers.
