Corporate Commercial Law is going to teach the student how to incorporate under the Business Corporations Act of Alberta and the benefits and obligations attached to such a process. Structuring different types of business organizations will be addressed as well as taking a close look at Limited Liability Partnerships and Share Purchase Agreements. This course provides students with the skills to maintain minute books and attend to annual requirements as prescribed by the Government or as set forth in the Corporation’s constating documents.
This course introduces the student to the steps in the process of civil litigation in the Province of Ontario, with an examination of the entire process of a civil law suit from the commencement of proceedings to the end of the trial. The first stage of the detailed examination covers the commencement of proceedings to the close of pleadings, where the student focuses on the rules of procedure and on practical law clerk tasks such as opening files and drafting pleadings, motions and affidavits of service. In the next stage, the student examines procedural rules, proceedings, processes and documents from discovery through to trial in the Superior Court. The course also covers special procedures, including appeals, mandatory mediation, simplified procedures, the commercial list, and motor vehicle insurance claims.
This course introduces students to criminal law and procedure covering the basic principles of criminal liability, including the statutory sources of criminal offences and the concept of burden of proof. Students learn about criminal offences that proceed by way of summary conviction to prepare paralegals for their increased role in criminal trial matters. Basic structure of the Criminal Code will be covered as well as a detailed analysis of police investigatory powers, Charter protections, various defences, the trial process, sentencing, and appeal rights and procedures.
Conveyancing refers to the process of changing the ownership of real estate. In this module you will learn about the legal nature of ownership of land, the different ways in which land can be owned, and about various encumbrances against Title to land. You will learn the steps needed to convey Title to land from one party to another.
This course introduces the student to the substantive and procedure law of separation and divorce, including discussions on dissolution of marriage, spousal and child support, custody and access, common-law relationships, and definition of spouse, property rights, and financial disclosure.
The course examines matrimonial property rights, financial statements, procedure on a property claim, separation agreements, enforcement of orders, and variation and indexing of orders. In addition to learning substantive law and theory, students work on practical skills that law clerks require when working in a family law practice, including the preparation of relevant family law documents.
This “hands-on” course will improve the learning, studying, researching, writing, and listening skills of the student and allow then to become familiar with the various forms of communication required of legal administrative assistants. The students will become familiar with legal terminology and legal documentation and develop the ability to synthesize their skills and knowledge in order to accurately transcribe legal correspondence and documentation.
This course introduces students to the knowledge and skills required by a legal professional working in a legal office that relate to office management, practices and procedures. It begins with the roles and responsibilities of various professionals encountered in a legal setting. Then it explores the workings of the court system, time and financial management, organizational skills, communication skills, the production and processing of legal documents, and legal terminology and citation.
This course is designed to assist legal professionals in understanding the areas in which an estate law practice is typically carried on. Students will learn the dual meaning of the word ‘estate’ as denoting the total property of a living or a deceased person: this course is concerned with both meanings.
Windows Level 1 course provides an overview and introduction to the Microsoft Windows operating system (Professional Edition). Students will learn the basic concepts and most commonly used features and functions of Windows. They will learn the fundamentals of the Windows operating system along with how to locate important system information, set up, manage, and remove user accounts, as well as how to navigate and view files on the computer using File Explorer.
The Introduction to Keyboarding course is designed for individuals who have no formal training in keyboarding. The objective is to teach students the skill of keyboarding – essential to the learning of other computer applications and workplace skills. The course begins with an overview of the basics of computer use. Students learn about the components of the computer and keyboard, as well as the seating, posture, and hand positioning necessary for efficient keyboarding.
The Keyboard Skill Building Level 1 course is designed for individuals who have basic keyboard proficiency, and wish to increase speed and dexterity. Each lesson increases key recognition and builds confidence using the keyboard, while improving speed and accuracy. Speed achieved depends on personal dexterity and time spent on practice lessons. Students who are not already familiar with the Typing Trainer software program are introduced to it. Typing Trainer helps students learn and improve skills using a variety of methods: graphical keyboard drills, speed drills, alphabet drills, word, phrase and sentence drills, and keyboarding Self-Tests. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to keyboard at minimum 25 words per minute.
The Keyboard Skill Building Level 2 course is designed for individuals proficient in keyboarding who wish to increase speed and dexterity. Students are introduced to Special Keys on the keyboard. Each lesson increases key recognition and builds confidence using the keyboard, while increasing speed and accuracy. Speed achieved depends on personal dexterity and time spent on practice lessons.
The Business Math course at Academy of Learning Career College is designed to introduce the basic mathematical skills needed to understand, analyse, and solve mathematical problems encountered in business and finance, and in investment decision making. This course introduce students to helpful tools that will enable them to perform quick, easy, and accurate basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will also learn to round numbers, calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals, as well as calculate interest, payments on loans, net present values, and returns on investments. Finally, students will compare leasing and purchasing options, look at break-even points, explore statistical terminology, and calculate and display various statistics.
In the Microsoft Excel Level 1 course, students learn to create and manage worksheets and workbook files; enter data and create basic formulas to perform calculations. They learn to edit and manipulate cell content, modify worksheet structure, view and format worksheets, and use Excel’s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use themes to format workbooks and practice preparing, previewing, and printing worksheets.
In the Microsoft Outlook Level 1 course, students will learn how to use both the e-mail program and the personal information manager components of Microsoft Outlook. The skills learned in this course will help students use Microsoft Outlook effectively both at work and in your personal life.
In Microsoft Word Level 1 course, students learn to create, navigate, and organize documents and use the help functions. They learn to edit and manipulate text, view and format documents, and use Word’s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use proofing and language tools, create, format and modify tables, work with hyperlinks and cross references, and learn how to preview and print a document.
The Microsoft Word Level 2 course teaches students intermediate- to advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft Word application. In this course, students learn to customize Word and build upon the basic skills learned in the Word Level 1 course. They learn how to increase their productivity and enhance their documents using some of Microsoft Word’s intermediate to advanced level features.
Job Search and Résumé Writing provides students with both traditional and innovative job-search techniques and résumé writing skills required to gain employment in today’s competitive marketplace. The course combines theoretical, how-to information with hands-on practical applications. Students are required to draw on their own experiences to identify work preferences, accomplishments, technical and transferable skills, and to research, organize, and analyze information; and to apply their knowledge in a series of job search preparation and implementation tasks.
The course is designed to improve the student’s learning experience and prepare him or her for personal and professional growth and success. The focus is on increasing the student’s self-discipline and self-esteem. The positive concepts taught in this course are intended to unleash the student’s potential for growth and creativity, resulting in personal and professional development. Humor and practical examples are used to target the primary concerns of adult students.
