Graphic designers today must be ready to tackle a wide range of projects from identity design to editorial design to product and packaging design. In the Graphic Design 1 course, students will establish a firm foundation for professional design work and explore the challenges of designing posters, logos, magazine covers, book layouts, 3D designs, and brand identities. Students will hone the design process, as they research each project, develop concepts, incorporate feedback, and begin to develop a portfolio.

InDesign Basics or equivalent experience.
Module 1: The Process of Design
Students will explore the design process, including research, concept development, and critique. They will examine the tools and production methods of great 20th century designers to understand how classic graphic design evolved into today’s digital techniques.
Module 2: Text and Typography
In this module, students will review typography fundamentals and use in composition. They will look at selecting a typeface, including style, tone, and expression.
Module 3: The Shape of Design
This module addresses essential concepts in magazine layout including using a grid to plan layout and text treatment, and researching and planning the structure of a page or spread.
Students will also learn about effective layout design of magazine covers and spreads,
Module 4: Paper and Publishing
Students will look at the publishing of old and new media and learn about book design and paper terminologies such as embossing and die-cutting,
Module 5: Products and Packaging
In this module, students will look at how visual messages are used to shape consumer perceptions, and how typography, color, and imagery work together to convey a message to consumers.
Module 6: Business and Production
Students will explore graphic design careers, and learn tips for self-promotion, working with clients, and managing design jobs professionally. They will learn about printer use and about developing a portfolio.
Evaluation is based solely on an Academy of Learning Career College final exam. Prior to taking the final exam, students must successfully complete all the components of the online course material. Participants who receive 75% or higher on their exam will receive a certificate.
